1965 Mid-60's AA/Fuel Dragster "Blown 392 HEMI". This car is the recreation of the original Woody Gilmore (Race Car Engineering) Atlas Oil Tool Special that was competitively campaigned in the AA/Fuel Dragster class in the mid 1960’s in Southern California.
The current car (chassis and two bodies) were built by formidable race car builder Fred Hayhurst at his Chino, California shop for a nostalgia dragster enthusiast in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The car contains several pieces of the original chassis that were recovered and incorporated in the rebuild. The car had only a few starts before I acquired it and returned it to Southern California.
The wheelbase is the original 148 inches. All tubing is 4130 chrome moly. The car has a P and S steering box with a RCE pitman arm. The rear end is early Chrysler with 3.43 ring and pinion with Pat Foster axles. The drive line coupler is a Hampshire quick release unit. The car has Wilwood disc brakes. The cockpit is finished in pleated leather. The safety harness is Diest.
The rear Rebel aluminum chrome wheels have Goodyear 12.00-16 tires. The clutch can is polished aluminum with McCloud flywheel and clutch components. Two Diest parachutes are mounted on the rear hoop. The front torsion bar suspension has Anglia front spindles with John Hanson front spoke wheels and tires. Custom polished aluminum fuel tank built by Hayhurst.
As stated, the car has two Hayhurst bodies. The first is an exact and original replica of the Atlas Oil Tool Special. The painting and silver leaf lettering graphics was done by painter extraordinaire Phil Whetstone in his Los Angeles shop. The second body is shown in the video. It has no lettering, graphics, or decals on it. Both bodies are in excellent condition with no blemishes or other defects.
