Core shift really has noting to do with cylinder placement as I have seen many block that one cylinder would not pass a sonic test making the block useless for a performance build.
I have seen a lot of blocks that show a lot of core shift if your going by the front cam journal and the cylinders sonic test fine. On the other hand I have seem many blocks that show perfect core shift and fail a sonic test.
496 seem to be pretty common and I have seen early and late blocks fail for a 060 over bore.
Being a production block they all have to be checked before any work is done.
