Dear Dwaine,
Thank you for contacting me about the federal government. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.
I believe in and support all the rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights and Idaho Constitution. I have championed these rights throughout my political career, standing against government intrusion into the privacy and freedoms of individual citizens.
I have been particularly concerned about the expansion of the federal government's authority into areas traditionally - and in my view constitutionally - reserved to the states. That was one of the reasons I decided to leave Congress and run for governor, to exercise the legitimate problem-solving authority that states are uniquely empowered and qualified to use as laboratories of the republic.
I firmly believe in states' rights specifically protected by the 10th Amendment. It is my opinion that over many years the balance of power has been distorted and the federal government has taken authority that was never intended by the U.S. Constitution. My goal as your governor is to empower Idaho to be all that America was meant to be and to empower Idahoans to be the architects of their own destiny. I hope you will join me in that endeavor.
