If that thing is a hydraulic cam just preload the lifters with the engine off. Some may disagree but oh well.... I always did it that way and no problems. Just tighten the nut while spinning/ wiggling the pushrod between your fingers until the lash is gone then go a half turn. You will get many different opinions on how far to go...some say quarter..some say half turn...some 3/4 etc. I have even seen a book that said 1 full turn.( too much I think) You just need to center the plunger in the lifter.
No way would I put up with the mess of oil spraying everywhere trying to run the valves with the valve cover off.
