trans specialties super 8inch
I have the spragless super 8 (really a 9inch) in my corvette with a 565 with compression. It stalls on the transbrake to about 5800 but since the car is 2100lbs I dont think it goes that high at launch. I thought about putting this engine and trans and converter in my 3400lbs camaro for a while. Any idea is the engine will drive through the converter.

I would think that with that weight a spragless would be very lazy. I put one in my 3200 lb Nova a while back and it only 60 footed 1.44 but ran 9.50's The plus was that it was ultra consistent. I swapped it out for a TCI off the shelf and went 1.33 60 foot with the wheels in the air and 9.30's It was like driving a different car. It will work, but its not ideal.
Hope this helps |
Did you buy a 9 inch off the shelf or a 8 inch. 3speed or 2 speed?

I have a T/S 8 inch spragless 5800.
It sixties in the high 120's with an ocassional 130 in a fairly light (approx 2800LB) 69 camaro behind a 496 BBC. If it's not right fro your app, why not just tweak it rather than buying a whole other converter? |
Both of mine were 8" using a 1.80 low gear powerglide. The one I bought off the shelf was a group 6 TCI.

I did send it back for a re-stall. I just think it could 60ft better. It is a 15:1 565 in a 2200lbs Corvette, with me in it. It was around 1.22 in 60ft. It had 4:30 gears and the T/S super 8 5800 stall. Whatever I do I am just looking for educated decisions. This is my first spragless and I am wondering if the 8 inch regular converter would be faster is all. I would hate to be giving up 2-3 tenths!

I've tried more converters in the last 2 years then most do in 10 years
the super 8 9" behind my 582 is as fast and mph's more then the 8" b&m that everyone loves and claims is bad fast. I've ran sprag and spragless stuff the spragless stuff is always as fast as the sprag stuff .. same brand converters and different brand converters. My thoughts slow 60ft is what I want, but I want it to haul rear from then on, and I seem to have found that sweet spot. My b&m will whip my TSI to the 60ft by 5 hundreths but yet will not out run it down track et or mph wise. |
Thanks hammertime that is helpful as well as you other guys too. I am aware that sometimes the right converter just may be the reason our cars pick up and the debate of sprag and spragless may get wound up in it but I surely didnt know yet. So many combinations out there Im not sure if it is possible to apply what you hear to your own specific combination or not. Its just interesting to draw on a wealth of comments and see what gets uncovered.....thanks to you all!
