Theres as much increase from a solid to a roller as there is from a hydraulic to a solid lift cam. Its one of the best $$ per HP that you can spend. The reason it is, is because the quicker you can close the intake valve, the more hp youll make. On a solid lift cam, if your ramp speed where as quick as a roller your lifters would fly off the cam. Because you can't put the spring pressure on a solid to keep the lifter on the cam, that you can on a roller. If you did, you would have to much heat lifter to cam and lose a lobe. The roller allows you to have more ramp speed and more spring pressure for more Horsepower.

cams
what i should have asked is a hydraulic flat tappit to a solid flat tappit cam? i have a comp cam 292 501 lift and was thinking of going to a solid cam. what are the pro and cons.besides adjusting valve lash?

you always stand the chance of floating a valve with hydraulic lifters if your wanting to turn it up (high rpm) as a drag car.....i personally have floated them on the street ( back in the day)..
if you are going to be seeing more street use then strip then hydraulic roller hands down ( IMO)..If its gonna be drag only ..OR you plan on turning it up (rpm) then go the other way.... oh yeah..i got a solid flat tappet in a 406ci....about a 520 lift...very quick..lots of bottom end. also remember if you go solid flat tappet you need to break in cam the old school way.......( imo) |
There is no way with the parts available today that I would run anything but a roller in a high performance motor. Street or strip. No worries about oils, breakin, etc. Just my opinion.
