Will it run on pump gas
I was thinkin about buying a small block engine that is well built, forged everything, no corners were cut. This engine is a 13.1 compression engine. My question is first will it run on 93 octane? Second If it will will it hurt the engine? My plans are to play with it on the street, then occasionally the strip.

A high compression engine requires higher octane fuel to prevent detonation. Detonation is a condition where the fuel air mixture ignites while being compressed before the spark plug fires. Your engine would probably live longer with 110 and you'd enjoy it more.

E85 fuel if you have it at your pump

Do not run that engine on low octane fuel.It will hurt the engine.If it was 11.1 compression it may be okay on 93 octane but i sure wouldn't use it on a 13.1 motor.

I'll go out on that limb too. I think it may have been Hink. His advice was sound about using E85 if it is at the pumps in the area. He probably should have explained that E85 is around 105 octane. The guy may have thought E85 was 85 octane. Either way, he probably has thin skin.

I haven't posted on this tread until now. But i have to say that it's real easy to get confused on what octane you can get away with and i for one still cannot understand how this happens. I know what octane it take to run a high compression engine, like 13 to 1, but what confuses me is how you can EX: run a 250 shot of nitrous on a 10.2 468" engine on 93 octane which we are doing,with very short lift (Lun Voodo #60232) cam 655/663, now we do retard it down from 38* to 32* when the nitrous comes on, and the car and driver weighs 3900 lbs plus it ran [email protected] MPH last time out. I realise the cooling effects of nitrous, but it still has to be bumping up the static compression to atleast 13 to 1. That's one senireo, the other is how do these guys put a turbo charger pumping 15/20 lbs boost to a 10 to 1 engine without intercoolers, that has to be bumping the static compression ratio up well above 13 to 1 and thay are not useing auto retard systems or intercoolers, just O2 sensers. Go figure :?:
I for one would never suggest to run 13 to 1 on pump gas, nor would i do it, i would opt. for AV gas atleast. Sorry for stirring the pot here, maybe someone has the real answers, but it sure is to heck not me. Zip. Zip. |
