lets get everyones feedback
I`m building a 540 tall deck pump gas engine, I`m mainly looing for the right cam to use, solid roller, I`m thinking :
700 HP and streetable afr 315 cnc heads 10.2 - 1 comp mahle coated w/ small ring package I need the right cam, I want to run it too about 6800-7000 3100 # car Glide w/4500 stalll 4.11/ 31 tire lets get some cam specs from everyone, I only want to do it once, lol Ive called a couple of cam makers, and I`m getting lots of different #s So lets ask the raging masses .lol anyones specs are welcome... |
what cam?
what rpm range? maximum rpm? what mph approx?
what are going to do with everyone's guesstimation? average? ?? need more info? carb, injection, efi? gas? methanol? |
OK convertor is a 4500, give or take a bit, I`m looking for a power range of 3500 - 6800 , running pump gas, 1050 - 1250 dominator, (old carb is a 1250) I have a # in mind for a cam, but everyone else I talk to says its wrong, So,I`ll see what everyone else says, I`m just going to go with a concencuss

bbc
It should make 700HP no problem.
I would suggest a solid roller cam "around" .713 lift intake and exhaust and 265/275 @.050 Duration.I would like to see a little more intake runner volume than 315. AFR's are nice and it will be a street motor, but 540's (cid) seem to like 345. Some folks on this forum have more experience than I do and they may have better suggestions. You will make 700 HP .I had a 12.4 to 1 dart headed (345's) out of the box- 496 BBC. in my case the intake runners were a little big, but I had the heads they were new and they would work well if I decided to spray it.It made over 700 hp Similar cam specs Good Luck Also the cam companies out there will give you advise and RJ has some very smart people that may help also |
Thanx, yours seems a little closer than what I got from the cam compamies, lets see what others think.........
and the 315 head flows a bit better at .400 lift than the 335 head |
cam rec?
i would suggest a lift that is compatible with your valvesprings  what are they good for?
like your intake runner volume at 315cc, good choice.. also like the recommendation 265/275 degrees at .050", nice..not sure on sep, maybe 110 or 112 degrees.. how are we doing :D |
BBC carb suggestion
If you have the luxury, try the 1050 dominator.Maybe even the HP. They seem to work well on the street and the track. I even had an older 2 circuit nas car style 1050 and it never gimped or had a hesitation or transition problem, it was on 2 bbc's. A 10 to 1 489 roller motor with steel heads, and the 496. 12 to 1 alum headed 700 Hp BBC dynoed and the air fuel ratio,s were good. And alot of street driving JMO

I've never had a 4500 stall for the street. I'm sure the other guys could give some advice on that.
The 11-773-8 would be good, but you may also want to look at the 11-772-810. Depends on weather you want a little more street or strip. MECHANICAL ROLLER − Good in weekend warrior with 3000+ stall. Needs good intake and exhaust with low gears. 3000 to 7000 11-772-8, 286 292 248 254 .653 .660 110° MECHANICAL ROLLER − Best for Pro Street. Needs good intake and exhaust, 11:1+ compression and 3500+ stall. 3200 to 7200 11-773-8 292 298 254 260 .660 .666 110° Either way It's gonna be a nice motor in a street car!! |
Thanx Guys............now those are the numbers I thought would work,,and having these second oppinions, just makes me feel a little better about going that route, I had picked two Lunati cams, and they are pretty much bang on with these two just listed, thanks again !!! The only thing is , is that Comp cams doesnt list cam timing at .050, and I`m trying to line up my Dynamic Comp, I need the Intake closing around 50, does anyone have the ABDC on the comp cams @ .050. ?

No matter which cam you use buy a 7 / 4 swap cam and get a set of Isky lifters!! I used comp everything on mine and several lifters came apart and ruined the cam, which is why I changed cams. |
Yes I`m not to keen on the Comp stuff either, I lost a set of lifters too. And comp screwed up a special grind for me a while ago, seems their getting to big, and a little bit sloppy...........I do like the Isky lifters though.....
|
You guys never hurt the block when the lifters broke? I had a roller lifter break and it took out the block and everything else.

BTW it was a new motor with less than 50 (200') passes. That's probably like 15 or 20 passes for you drag racers when you figure I don't do burnouts. I run a special order crane now. |
