Advice on possible Chevelle trade!! Help!!
Gents... help me on this important decision!!
Racing season is about done here & I never made it to the track this year. I bought this car wanting something more wild, but did not think about how hard it would be to sell later. My car is a 69 Camaro X44 car that is really far more of a race car than a driver. It is kinda streetable, but has slicks, & "sp" plates for cruises & such. 6pt cage, no back seat, no heater or wipers & a 6" cowl fiberglass hood. BBC/auto. I believe it is worth about 14K & is very presentable/good looking. It is for sale here locally @15k. Each time I show it, people love it, but it is too much of a race car for them... I currently have it on Craigs list in Eugene, Or. Here is my dillemma: I showed it to guy today who wanted to make more of a pro touring car out of it & would be into it to it too deep to do so. BUT- he told me of a car he would "trade".... I got all emotional & worked up about. It is a 1968 Chevelle 327/factory 4spd matching number car that is all original except wheels, tires & exhaust. It needs some minor body & paint. It has 146K original miles, motor never rebuilt yet. SS Hood, but otherwise totally stock- no A/C car. She is a presentable driver in the current state. Interior is deluxe factory & is nice. This is a nice matching number car w/ good bloodlines. I do not hear of many w/327/4spd in matching numbers anymore. He purposed a straight-across trade. I am going to consider it for a week (I got too emotional today- I wanted it!!) I want a driver again & something I could put my kid's in the back seat, etc... my car is too wild & I need to get a car that is more mild. What do you all think??? how much is that Chevelle worth?? I could certainly turn it faster than my 69 Camaro... but I think my car is nicer overall. Help!! Scooter |
Scoot, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you go to "team chevelle" forum. They have a "what's it worth" section and post pictures. As many pictures as you can get. That site is FULL of some very knowledgeable Chevelle guys. There are at least 2 or 3 guys there that restore chevelles for a living. You will get little to no help without pics, they don't like to guess.Add good pics and they will help you. Does the VIN start with 138 ?I THINK IT WAS 69 WHEN THE ss 396 STOPPED being a separate model(might be wrong) but until 69 a 138 vin meant SS

Scoot-
Just got back from the Carlisle PA show, and I can say this. The 68-69 Chevelles were getting a lot of action. There is a black 68 priced at $23k with average paint that had people all over it all day. I have had both and I would grab the 68 matching nos 4 speed car. At the very least, a wider audience, and probably an easier chance to sell if you ever have to. |
Tod: Im not sure if it is a 138 car or not... I always thought that meant it was an SS... this is basicaly a stock 327/matching 4spd car that is pretty stock (it does have an SS hood). I will find out the vin to make sure the motor is a match (because that is important to me on this one). I will take you up on the Chevelle forum too. I have many pics of the car now, but they are on my e-mail & I am not good at how to do that yet. For some reason, it seems easier to find 69 Chevelles... like there are less 68's... not sure if this is true or not.
Scorp: What you said is what I am thinking too. I could paint this thing & do a few minor details & not only have an awesome car, but MY FAVORITE year of Chevelle too. It is not as nice as my Camaro, but MUCH easier to turn/sell when that time comes... I have a pro-street/drag car at best w/a limited market for sure. I appreciate your feed back guys... keep them coming... my wife is sick of talking about it !! Lol!! |
Rigs i'm probaly going to get jumped alover for this post, First i don't like either one of the cars, i grew up with Cameros, but they are the most popular cars on the planet except early Corvette's. The Chevelle will never be worth what the Camero is worth in the long run, matching #'s or not. :?: why don't you just pull the b/blk out of the Cmaero and put a crate motor in it, big tires no big deal, change to street radials, find a back seat and haul your kids to McDonalds, heaters are a dime a doz. and the other missing parts are easy too find. You already have a nice paint job no body work needed on the Camero.
O'K guys jump on me i have old tuff skin. JMO Zip. |
brother around here a 69 camaro in any shape will bring at least 10,000. and i mean bad shape.a 68 chevelle sbc, 4 speed in good shape ( looked at one about a week ago) body, good, interior good engine good, overall the car would be 7 out of 10 and it was selling for 8000. de tune the camaro like zip said and have a ball.if you still want a chevelle save a few bucks and buy a roller and work on it while you drive the camaro.man if i had the bucks id take the car off your hands in a heartbeat, and i dont really like camaros.
|
I agree with zipp on detuning the car. if you like the chevelle buy it and have both. As with any sale you will never get what you have into it. for me....Im a chevelle guy....I want a frame under me!

I have a 72 Chevelle and I'd jump at the chance to own a 69 Camaro. The 69 is a stand alone car. The 67 & 68 are nearly identical. But the 69 is recognizable from the front and rear as a 69. It would be worth the effort to just make it over to the car you want.

This is the sorriest excuse at flaming zipper, I've ever seen. :P

Hey Scoot ! What a gearheads dream of a dilemma to be in ! :D
It's going to all boil down to what YOU want to do and how much dough you have to work with. Lots of things to weigh against each other here though. YOUR personal lifestyle and needs/wants VS future market values. I'm a 'live for today' kinda guy and don't worry about future market values, it's present FUN FACTOR value for me. I'm into cars and carcrafting for the present enjoyment of our hobby. Who knows how long we will have to actually do this unhindered or unregulated. The other consideration is, if this 'velle is a rare and valuable piece, restore it and sell it as a money maker as soon as you could. That would alleviate any street cruzin' with it though. Or flip it for a profit 'as is' and buy a different 'velle for a cruzer. |

I posted this cause I had a 68 Chevelle once after high school & I am a total SUCKER for a 68/9 Chevelle w/a 4spd!! I love them!! I might see one w/ some rot & think "Poor thing, let me help you" ... but I see something else I am like "that POS... I am not touching it" ... you know everyone has that car they love, that one car that makes you loose all logic.... like a bad-girl girlfriend with... really big... you know. My car is fun & most of the time I get to be high on the food chain when I drive it on the street, but at the expense of looking in my rear view mirror most of the time. This Chevelle is just not as good of a car as I have & I feel like I would be leaving money on the table... all the hard work I put into her etc... I will keep you guys posted. |
For pete's sake, it was a razz to a friend. That's all it was, nothing more, nothing less. Holster your weapons, and put the wagons back in single file, no one is suggesting Zip needed flamed. Least of all me.

8) Cool

Well... I pulled the trigger. Drove 7 hours each way to bet on this car. I would describe it as a nice original survivor with only Weld wheels & dual flow master exhaust... she is stock the rest of the way except one re-paint of the original color. My 69 Camaro is gone...
68 Chevelle: Deluxe interior bench seat, door buzzer still even works... nice interior/headliner... amazing condition. Matching number 327/4bbl car w/ 4 speed. I do not see these in 327/4speed much... matching numbers. Still has the original carb & intake even. I am the 3rd owner. Car has 186,000 original miles & has been garaged many years. Everything is in good working order & the synchro's are still good in the 4-speed... I tested them out good last Sunday... still got the bruise on my leg from my wife too. lol. The car needs some paint, probably freshen up the motor a little. A few odds & ends, she will be a neat optioned original car. Glad I did the trade, but it's hard to go from 500Hp down to 300... |
Well Scoot, sounds like you're happy with the new ride. Enjoy 8)
|
well im late to the party but thats another story my opinion was to do it im a sucker for a bodies and 327/4spd is in m/o a rare bird usually motor went bye-bye for 350's or bbc motors but since im late grats
|
YEEEHAAAAA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats on your new baby, Scoot ! Boy or Girl ? Has she/he kept you awake nights with the screaming..... tires ? You and the wife may have to work in....shifts ! When ya gonna post some pics ?? |
Yeah, PICS or it didn't happen!! :D
|
Her name is Sheila... she is a very good girl too.
I agree w/ Dragon... it is a rare bird nearest I can tell. I don't know HOW rare, but I am going to find the build sheet (hopefully) & dissect it. She is a matching number "EA" code 275/327 4bbl. Original 4-spd, & the emblems say "327" instead of the disappointing 307. She has no pwr steer. She has the original radio still.. everything is in operation & works. It is an idiot light car too.. never had aftermarket gauges even. My friends, Sheila is a true virgin!! I have pic's, but I will inevitably get confused on how to post them. But I will try soon. It is maroon w/ black deluxe interior. Right now it has Weld draglites & dual exhaust. Only other part not original is the SS hood. I forgot how fun a 4speed car was!!! Love it! |
Scooter,
Good for you man! I am glad you got your street car, I believe you will have lots of fun in it! Email me your pics if you need help posting them. I knew a Sheila one time........ok maybe 2 or 3 times! :) :) :) :) |
Congrats on your sucessful trade....great to a deal gone right! sounds like you will be very happy with it. I know I would, chevelle over a camaro any day! :)
|
scoot if you want ralleys let me know
|
Dragon: you read my mind. (car dudes think alike). This car now has Weld Drag Lites... which it had 17" & 18" tourque thrusts prior to these. I need some rallies for sure. Would like to get the configuration right though... like wider rallies on back; maybe 7 or 8" in front. Sheila needs to look period correct in my opinion. she will need new front springs too... they are dropped.
Hey Rudy: that is very cool of you. I have some pic's of her b4 the drag lites I put on recently... I will send you those pic (only one I have yet). Thanks!! |
scoot i got 4 15x7 with 3 decent caps if interested let me know
|

Hemi, suicide, beast, double-d, all you guys... thanks for your feedback on this one... it was a hard choice. |

a guy at my track came out with a new super pro car this yr a 68 chevelle, he won div 6 finals this yr page 72 oct1 digger, they have bad ass body lines CONGRATS on your new ride, I like it :D |
man if a guy didnt know better would say been redone once
|
Very nice Scooter, congrats!!
|
Scooter that is an awesome machine you got there. She is beautiful. Congrats on finding such a rare find.
|
Well boys, thanks. I feel like I did the right thing.
She is presentable; but she is about 15 to 20 footer (pics are deceiving). The motor is pushing some oil by the rings @ WOT, she needs to be freshened up, the body is really amazing given all the metal is stock (the rear fender lips have been re-done however). Either they took great care of the transmission, or it is rebuilt (not sure). I am a hopeless Chevelle 68/69 FREAK. I mean, it is my favorite body. This will be my 4th A-body 68-72... it has been 20 years since I had my last one... I am 40 now. long time. I love looking down that big hood seeing the front pop up & down between gears... I got the Chevelle bug again big time. |
Very nice lookin' car Rigsby! Looks CLEAN :!:
I'm happy for ya' cam67152 |
Looks good Scoot. I bet it looks better with the Drag Lites on it though. 8)
|
CRAGAR SS !! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
|
She's a GORGEOUS one, Scoot !! No pic of the engine room ?
---------------- |
DD: your right. I should have sent a motor pic. It is a absolutely stock 327 w/ original valve covers, intake, QJ carb, stock manifolds, etc... bone stock. It does have a really cool original 69 Camaro SS 350/350HP dual snorkel air cleaner that is awesome original condition... I wonder if it is worth anything?? I will probably get a different air cleaner too.
