383 stroker - which carb do i need?
I have a 383 stroker motor, and i am wondering what size of carb i need. Its a street/strip engine. Comp Hydraulic roller cam, .542 intake ,560 exhaust, mahle pistons, eagle rods, eagle performance crankshaft, 202 camel hump heads. I talked to a guy about a 750 quick fuel carburator and he thinks I need to go with the 830 quick fuel. Any idea's? Im not sure what to go with. I want this thing to be fast, but I want it to idle and not flood.

I just put the motor in a 67 camaro SS, Turbo 400 tran, 4:11 gears.

go with the 750 i had a 830 bg on my 11.5.1 383 and went to the 750hp holley and the motor really liked it. my 1/4 times went from 11.33 to 11.12.

Be realistic a 650cfm is more air than that set up is going to flow.
If you punch these numbers in a cfm calculator you get 550-650 cfms being a street engine. |
carb size
hey kwk you may be right and you may be wrong. he didnt giv e his rpm operating range, which i am guessing should be around 6500. if thats is the case and you use the standard cfm formula of rpms x cu. in. divided by 3456 then you come up with the cfm of 700 cfm. i would go with a 700 as first choice and 750 as second choice. the 650 cfm is really too small of a carb for this engine. being a 383 and a healthy cam it really could use the 750 cfm. just my opinion chevy art

10.25 compression, low flow heads, and he wants a it to clearly idle and not load up. A dyno would show that the engine would make no more power at 6500 than 5000.

ok this is comin from someone who has a very similar 383
the difference between 650 and 750 was night and day deffinately go with the 750 ul like it much better |

That engine combo would be more fun to drive with the smaller carb The only argument that makes sense for the 750(in my opinion) would be that you would have the bigger carb later on when you updated the engine with better heads... go with the 750 i had a 830 bg on my 11.5.1 383 and went to the 750hp holley and the motor really liked it. my 1/4 times went from 11.33 to 11.12. in a street car too small is way better than too large. Just my opinion but I agree with kwkracing. Those heads are going to be finished at a relatively low rpm. |
well as hard to believe as it may be i had a 650 vac secondary and a 670 vac secondary, and it woke up drastically when i put the 750 dp on it, all i had to do was put a lil bit smaller squirter in the front

his and my cams are not tht big
the motor makes plenty of vacum even at idle |
Ive always gotten better performance out of a double pumper vs a vacuum secondary carb no matter what size the carb is.

I have never used a vac secondary carb either...AT least not on my stuff. I put one on my father's car but he never runs it hard at all. Just putts around.

KW & Tod make sense on this. I have done the opposite in my ignorant youth. Went from a correct size vac/secondary carb to a mech/double pump that was too big for the application & noted the less-than-desirable result. Smaller is better for the street in my humble opinion. I remember guys in high school who would put a huge cam in a 283 in a Impala with a power glide... with like 273 gears. They throw it in to neutral @ the stop light, drop in in gear, fan the throttle to get her moving, BOG away till about 3600 RPM's & hit a disappointing power band while blowing black smoke in the air... yeah... all for that lopey sound. I am sure that car was slower because of our "expertise." Case & point, bigger is not always more efficient.
