Converter or planetary>?
Guys, it was my first time out since I went thru the car this winter.
I did my burnout, staged, hit the gas and as soon as it lifted the front wheels WHAM - nothing - thank god for rev limiters. I had the converter out over the winter for a tweak (tighter) they aslo upgraded my stator, said it was border line for my power/combo, I dont know? The car acts like it's in neutral, but has park. I was told by a track offical who pulled me back to the trailor that it my planetary (1.76) Personally I'm leaning towards the converter since it was the only thing that was worked on and the tranny wont do anything, no 1st, 2nd, or rev, the tranny has never given me a momments trouble in the 3 years I've run it but you never know though. Just wanted a general consenus before I pull the tranny tomorrow. For those of you unfamilar with my combo, heres the low down. 496 BBC - making approx 700HP 69 camaro @ 2800 lbs 1.76 glide turbo spline input shaft - Ambruzi racing. Converter was orignally a 8 inch T/S spragless - stall "new" was suppose to be 5800, but was way looser than that, reason for the tweak. 513 dana 60 - 32x14.5 slicks Your thoughts? Thx, Cp |
You have to start somewhere.Pull the veter and go from there. That Perkins power is hard on some parts.

Input shaft broke finally twisted off

Is it a powerglide or turbo spline. Convertor could have let go since it had just been worked on, but i would say input shaft. Get a good vasco input. I have seen many cars twist the input shaft off just as you said happened to you. The input shaft is the smallest shaft on the driveline.

Turbo spline.
Thx for your input. |
Its not often, but i've seen the pump gears break. There only made of a sintered steel which is extreemly brittle.
Good Luck Craig |
x2 on the front pump.
|
When it comes to transmissions if it has been broke .. I've broke it. Sure sounds like a input or the 1.76's are gone to me. I've never broke a 1.76 but I have buddies who break them right and left 1.80 is the only way to go.
I've broken oh 6 pumps in 3 yrs it acts nothing like a broken pump IMO(thank god I found a good trans guy now) |
You are right at that HP rating that is borderline with the 1.76 gear. How old is the trans? is it a stock pump? It could be a couple things from pump gears to gear set. I would think the converter would not be the likely culprit in this instance. If Marco Abbruzi built the trans, I would give him a call.

Also failed to mention, it has the race pump. Thx for the inputs guys, I almost got it out today, will be -out tomorrow for sure, I'll let ya'll know what I find. Thx again, Cp |
I am going to lean on the input shaft with this one.

Well guys it was the plantaries, I crumbled them suckers good.
Called Marco at Abruzzi racing and he qouted me a price of $175 plus shipping for the 1.76's gear set or $900 for the "better" straight cut 1.80's. He said same thing as alot of you that at my HP level I'm pushing it with 176's but that he wouldnt be afraid to run them again, said they have about a 1/2 year life cycle in race trim so he said it was time for them to go anyway, no biggie. I had 2 full seasons on them. For now I'm gonna low ball it and go with the 1.76's so I can get back to racing and save up and get the 180's later on. Cp |
How fast you go ? ET ?
I was runnin 9.30's @ 136 on my stock glide till i switch to a deadenbear w/ a 1.80. Just one season tho my rookie year, maybe 75 passes or so. Craig |

I sell the 1.80 for $799 with a 2 year warranty. Matt Sommers 727-375-4737
|
What gear set you selling for $799
Dave- hope he does not do it. There is a reason why BTE prices dropped. Ever since they made the move with production 3-4 years ago the quality of the gear set has greatly decrease. A lot of guys that were all about the BTE stuff have gone other routes. |

Cp All in fun my friend, but i do look forward too all of us meeting and all because of RJ, a great site and dedicated to true racers, regulardless of a lot of BS that goes on here. Zip. |
Since you brought it up Zip. is there going to be anything going on lets say the beginning of July? I will be heading back east for a few days and might have to plan on being back there on a weekend.

A lot of guys that were all about the BTE stuff have gone other routes. Has it only been 3-4yrs .. I was thinking 8-9 yrs when quality goes away. Its funny when you ask people in the "know" on converters "if ya want fast and good for 50 passes at a time keep buying BTE's" lol |
It may have been a little longer. I know the gear sets where the 1st thing to go south followed by converters. It's nice to be able to offer a cheap gear set but when they start breaking the customer doesn't blame the guy that builds the gear set but the guy that put it in the trans.

1.80
OK,Guys been following this Post?
Its Time for G to put a New set of Standard Length 1.80 Planetaries Gearset in?Look like TSI!So hows got the Swingin DEAL? What Happened to the Guy in Iowa that was Selling and building the Trans stuff? I bought several things from Him,but memory is Not Working? Lets here it? Later G 8) |
You may be thinking of Steve Oldani out of the Waterloo area. Steve is a regular user on DragRaceResults.com. He is a BTE dealer. As you can tell, I have lost interest in using their product but as for Steve, he offers fantastic customer service and is a very reliable individual.
Abruzzi is all we use from gear sets to valve bodies to pumps to converters. Trans Specialties is my next choice if I was not going to use Marco's products in our transmissions. I believe Marco and TS work very closely together with research and development of new products. They are both great companies that stand behind their work. |
