using high volume oil pump
 

what are pros and cons of using a high volume oil pump i SBC race engine. i have always heard drag racers they dont like them because it may suck the pan dry under certain conditions. would really like some comments on this topic as i am getting ready for oil pump install in a new engine. any comments on high pressure oil pumps? chevy art

You mentioned high volumn and high pressure. Different animals...

I run a standard volumn BBC pump on the small block (special length oil pump drive required). Gives plenty of volumn and resonable pressure.

I have never seen the need to run a high volume pump on a SBC in a naturally aspirated engine. Unless you are running huge clearances I believe the standard volume pump is plenty. Running a higher volume pump would just bypass more oil and use up more horsepower to run. Pressure is completely different. I do change the spring to have more pressure than what a stock pump has. Usually around 65-70lbs hot pressure at speed. Just my unqualified opinion.

Man that's a good question and i'll bet the answers will come in all kinds of different opinions. i personally run high volume pumps but i also run .0025/.003 clearance rods and mains. I use the stabndard spring (42 lbs) with 20/50 oil. It will maintain 40/50 lbs at rpm, but idles around 20/25 lbs. hot. I haven't run one yet but i like the B/BLK pump with the 3/4" pickup. The problem with high pressure is that it robs a lot of HP, causes cam distortion, wears distributor gears, and causes irratic distributor timing. If i could i'd have 25 lbs. pressure crossing the finish line or go dry sump. I do run a front distributor drive on the blower motor.

Zip, you are right it seems there are always more ways than one to skin a cat. Many people develope there combination over the years and no particular way is always best.

Reeving over 7500 use 10550c

Nasty engine use 10990c over 8000 rpm, change spring to low pressure spring.

I use a high volume but I did it because my clearances are .003 on the rods and .003- .0035 on the mains.

Just be sure you have a good oil supply when running a high volume pump. I've seen guys put a high volume pump on a "stock" capacity pan and suck it dry at high RPMs. Just my 2 cents.
