Header choice?
 
I'm considering changing the headers on my 70 chevelle SBC I've been thinking about the hooker super comp's and the dyna-techs? anyone have any input?

If I was to buy new headres I would get headman husslers.

Please explain. I like the Super Comps but do not know anything about the Headman's.

I've used both. The Hedmans were excellent on my 496. When I went to the 572ci I put on a new set of Hookers. They lasted one season and started splitting. Had to repair in three places. Next season had to replace a whole pipe.
Needed some new collectors. They were only available black heat painted so had to get them recoated.

the super comps wrap around the frame and I had to slice the collector to bend it away from the power glide on the drivers side ,these headers were coated



the husslers are in frame,clear the gilde and are 1& 7/8 tube

1 7/8 THATS WHAT I HAVE ON MY SBC,GET THEM COATED IF YOU CAN AS IT HELPS KEEP YOUR ENGINE BAY TEMP.DOWN AND HELPS WITH SCAVAGING(SPELLING?)

How the hell do you put those on if they have one tube wrap around the frame? My super Comps are 2" on a BB ....Those are some goofy loking headers on yours...wow. Why do they need to be that way?

MY LEMONS HEADERS HAVE THE 2 INNER PORTS GOING AROUND THE FRAME ON BOTH SIDES MUCH EASIER TO GET TO THE PLUGS AND OIL FILTER THAN IT WOULD BE IF THE TUBES WERE INSIDE THE FRAME.CHECK IT OUT AT LEMONS HEADERS WEB SITE.

You're kidding right? The wrap around tube is a slip fit around the frame. You can see where it connects at the slip joint just under the inside of the frame rail.

the funny thing is I built the rollcage before I bought the headers and had a pipe right in the way of the header.so i cut it off

tell ya what Guys..i have found out if your anywhere close to being able to operate a Mig Welder (spot weld) and you are decently mechanically inclined with some patience..order you some straights and j Bends and flanges from Alston chassis and Build your own........

i was scared to death to do this before..then when i got to working from the flanges out..it was nothing....spot welded the joints together then took them to a Friend of Mine who done a nice neat final Tig on them.

(besides its only metal..you can always regrind and start over long as you don't cut them 6 inches short,,and you still can corrrect that with fitting a sleve coupler)..i learn the same way with installing rocker panels and floor pans.

just take your time and make use of a coat hanger or something flexiable to help you with the the geometery of the primaries...

you would be shocked at how little you will have in those headers
sure beats paying lemon $1500 for a set....buy the way lemon has nice headers

Driver's side has 10 welds in the pipes. All are ground down and nearly invisible, and will be when the powder coating is done.

I just finished up the pass side final grinding/sanding tonight. I'll get them tacked to the flange, tack the EGT bungs, and tack the collector tabs on tomorrow night. Then it's time for some TIG welding by Ash Bros (here from RJ) to finish them up.

It's been a fun project, and not overly difficult. The hardest part was actually taking a die grinder to the fender, knowing the cost if I screwed the fender or paint up, lol.

Not quite. Not enough room between firewall and tire to bring them out as low as I wanted.

It took 4 U-Bends, 4 J-Bends, 2 flanges, 2 Weld on Collectors, and 2 feet of 2.5" tubing to make what you see.

I made my own slip on collectors from weld on collectors because I'm cheap and have enough time to do so.

But yeah, if you can't find a header you like, make your own. Just takes time and patience. Most of us have more of both of those then cash.

If you have more cash than time/patience, buy Lemons! LOL

I bend tubes for a living and have access to top knotch cnc equipment, that's why it kills me to see what headers cost. We throw away so much Stainless scrap it is ridiculous. ...I could build a set of headers and make very few weld joints doing it...and save the program and make more later in little time....trouble is They won't let me put my car in the middle of the shop and work on it on company time with company equipment. :)

We also have a CMM Probe. I can take any tube such as a tail pipe and measure it and get XYZ data from it to program it into the bender. Would be pretty easy to measure a header tube that was cut and welded together and get a program to make it one piece...the only limitation to that would be the straight lengths between the bends.If they are too short you can't clamp the tube to bend it and it must be cut and weld or compound bend tools made.

Hey guys,

just spent 1600+ with all the little frills for the Lemons headers I purchased for my 70 chevelle.

Headers are really simple to build, the reason for my purchase was finding the time. I have been super busy trying to keep the business busy. Time is money, not all the time.

I will say the headers are quite nice, but for that kind of money I was kind of hoping they would come with the lemon calander girl, you know the type I am speaking of; they have long hair and legs, might be dressed in a pair of socks & be able to dance on a pole and most of all. they really do not require the ability to speak. In situations like this less could be more........

For the record, all I received was a nice flange & tube job.

Darn it! For just $100 more I could have got the hat option too? But seriously for what I had to sell to buy these I couldn't be happier with the fit and function. On a different note, when I first got them there was a foul up and I got some of someone else's parts and they got mine. Lemon's paid to send everything back and send me all the right parts and a free set of copper header gaskets for my setup. If you can't build your own and can afford to spend the money they make a fantastic product. I just wasn't setup or had the know how to build my own when I bought mine. Would have love to have saved that money for other things as it took me months to save more money for the motor. But you got to start some where.

Thanks...

Although the flanges came from Scribner, and the tubing from SPD Exhaust.

Flanges are 3/8" Moly steel, cut with a water jet. :shock:
