how do u meassure the throw on a crank ?

I believe the original poster was asking how to measure the stroke of a crankshaft....like for example if you were buying one used and wanted to make sure it was what it was said to be.

Crank throwing. You can throw an aluminum crank farther than a steel one. Oh wait, I don't think anyone makes an aluminum crank.

I think if we're seriously going to throw cranks around, we're going to need to build us a trebochet. 8)A trebochet, is an engine of sorts, a siege engine.

If my neightbor drinks too much and throws up on my crankshaft, does that count?

I think it does, but you can't just throw up on one journal. I think we are talking complete crank throw with the duration of stroke.....

Seriously though...I have wondered myself how to go about measuring the stroke on a crankshaft...I know what to measure but how would you do it accurately?

stick it in the engine block and measure bdc and tdc from the deck = stroke, that is if you dont have any other tools for checking...

goodson sells a stroke checking tool.

I know that...I was refering to a crank standing in the floor....measuring from the center of the main to the center of the rod.

dose aftermarket cranks have part #'s on them :?: :idea:

Any quality aftermarket crank has all the data on the #1 throw. The cast iron or cast steel may or may not have an indicator.

Buyer beware, check the throw and the material it's made from.
