Oil leak
I just got done putting my smallblock in my car and firing it up. Took it for a ride and I get back to the garage and I got oil dripping off the front suspension  I take a closer look and its my front main seal were it meets the timing cover. So What I'm asking is does any one have any tricks to putting a new gasket in while in the car :?:
|
Leak
What manufacturer? I've had pretty good luck with the Felpro one piece gaskets in the SBC.
|
Confused me, is it the gasket, or the seal?
|
I think He is talking about the front pan seal where the timing cover meets the pan....If so, I would blast it good with brake Cleaner and run a bead of silicone over it then smooth it with my finger....shit I do that with it while it's on the engine stand...never had one leak yet....knock on wood. It is a pain to replace the gasket in the car but I've done it...either got to get the pan loose or pull the dowel pins from the front of the block to get the cover off...if you have a chrome timing chain cover that's probably why it leaked...wire brush the chrome off or rough it up if that is the case.
If you are talking about the seal in the center of the cover where the balancer goes that one would be easy to change...but I've never had one leak. Is the balancer rusty or rough where the seal rides? Are you sure the balancer is all the way back onto the crank? |
Leak
I think it is the seal that goes across the pan on the front main on a SBC. But, it could be the front seal on the timing chain because we don't even know what engine it is yet. Hell, maybe it's an arctic seal. :?

You have to run the correct lip seal for the timing cover you have also. There are 2 different thickness...
|
sorry aqbout the confusion. I had the SBC on the stand and put a aluminum timing cover on it and a milodon deep sump pan because I had this problem before. It seemed like the gasket pushed up in the timing cover to far??? I guess I should have put the rtv to it more?
|
Wrong gasket it sounds like...

What do you mean pushed up in the cover, that doesnt make no sense at all. I'd try what Tod suggested as a quick fix, but before you get in a hurry and crank it up to check for leaks, let it set overnight, preferably 24 hours or more to let the silicon completely cure. If that doesn't work you'll have to take the pan off and replace the gasket, depending on what chassis you have, sometimes it's easier to go ahead and pull the motor rather than fight it tooth, fang and claw laying on your back. What do you mean pushed up in the cover, that doesnt make no sense at all. Goodluck>Cp I think mytmouz is right and he may have the wrong end seal gasket for the pan/block combo. A thin seal will push into the groove in the timing cover and not be thick enough to seal against the pan. Curtis |
Me three :!:
|
I used a blue fel-pro seal the one piece type. Do they make 2 different sizes??
|
Yes, one is early model (thick), one is late model (thin). I have a thin one on the shelf myself, bought the wrong one for an early model block. Sorry I don't have part numbers right now.
Curtis |
I don't know why Chevy decided to change the SBC but now you must match block, pan, timing cover and get the right gasket.
When the one piece oil pan gaskets came out, I have never looked back. No leaks and torque limiters!! Worth every cent. Dave |
Chevy made the front seal for the pan thicker in 1975 to make it easier to r&r the timing cover with the pan on.You can inerchange most left hand dip stick pans with each other if you use the right gasket, but the rods will hit some of the 265/283 pans when more than a 3 inch stroke is used. Most timing covers will inerchange except factory roller blocks, the gasket must match the pan.Bill.

I did what tod suggested. I sprayed it clean with brakeclean wiped it dry squirted the rtv silicone to it and buttoned it back up. Now I'm gonna cross my fingers and let it cure for a day or two.

I never knew Chevy made 2 different types of ends seals, for the SB, now I know. I guess he confused me when he called them gaskets and not end seals. I have used a thick bead of silicon in a pinch. |
If it is the wrong seal, the silicone won't help for long...
|
I had a front cover leak there once on the dyno, so we took a high powered shop vac and taped the hose to the valve cover breather, taped the other valve cover breather off, and put silicone on oil pan/timing cover seal and let the vacuume pull the silicone in good. Worked like a champ that time anyway. Just dont get carried away and fill the pan full of unneeded sealant!

It's a ''CHEBBY'' what else do you expect :?: :?: Leak's- knock's-Rattle's-Misses- or just plain Blowing up :!: :!:

I had enough room to drop the pan down and clean the area with some brake clean and shoot some goo on it  I hope it works. I'm not gonna fire it up till thur. or fri. I think I'm goin go to the truck pull and forget about the chevelle for a couple nights!
|
Man...if I had the pan loose I would have put a new/correct seal in there...the only reason I said use the RTV goo was to avoid taking the pan down.
|
I checked the numbers and it is the correct seal, correct pan, correct ti ming cover. The felpro seal I have said its reusable so I'm gonna try it . If it leaksits coming out and gettin fixed right . I cant stand oil leaks. :x

I got all my stuff from UPS today. The fed ex guy brought every thing but the carb fittings. ( imagine that!!). They said prob. tomorrow!

If you can't stand oil leak's then don't buy a ''CHEBBY'' your just asking for trouble :!: :!:   Well on second thought at least you know the underbody won't ever rust with all that oil on it :!: :!: :!:

AW COME ON, MOPARS LEAK SO MUCH OIL YOU COULD USE A MOPAR TO WATERPROOF YOUR DRIVE WAY :!: :!: :P :P
|
Isn't Triumph and Mopar built at the same plant?
|
No ''parker'' that's fiat, Well at least you can fix a leak on a ''MOPAR'' :!: :!: ''CHEBBIES'' just keep leaking or leak somewhere else :!: :!:
